Portable Refracting Astronomy Telescope for Kids & Beginners
Many people enjoy seeing stars and observing planets. A telescope is needed to get the best view, and there are plenty to choose from. However, they are expensive, so how do you get one if you live on a tight budget?
We have reviewed several telescopes that cost less than $ 1,000 and have compiled a list of seven that we think will give you the most value. We’ll tell you some of the pros and cons of each one so you can begin to narrow down the area that you have to choose from.
1-Celestron NexStar 8SE Telescope for Beginners and Advanced Users
Ideal for beginners and developers who want a huge aperture, easy lens setup, 40,000 object database, and automatic tracking, all at a relatively low price.

3-Orion SpaceProbe 130ST Equatorial Reflector Telescope
SpaceProbe’s 5.1 equivalent prime mirror is a good size for an entry-level telescope. Its primary mirror allows superb views of the planets and the moon, and its wide field of view is great for bright nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters.
The telescope has a “fast” f / 5 focal ratio, providing powerful performance over a wide field. If you are a backyard astronomer hunting for galaxies and nebulae, this makes it a solid choice for you.
With SpaceProbe 130ST, you’ll be able to use up to 260x magnification. This comes from a general rule of thumb that says the top magnification is 2x the aperture in millimeters. Indeed, the range would likely struggle to allow sufficient light to enter for such a high magnification. The image definition will be lost and blurry.
We would like to work on 70% of the maximum number to obtain the “maximum usable” number. For Orion, we’re looking at 180x as the best handy zoom.
The focal length of this telescope is 650mm. So, to achieve 180x zoom, you will need a 4mm eyepiece.
What the telescope contains are two Sirius Plossl lenses. At 25mm and 10mm, it offers 26x and 65x magnification respectively. We recommend adding something smaller for a larger magnification (it will give 6mm x 108).
Alternatively, you can purchase a 2x Barlow lens (read our guide: What is a Barlow lens?). Use with lenses available for 52x and 130x zoom levels.
The included lenses are ideal for taking advantage of a wide field of view with DSOs. But you will likely crave more magnification when looking at the moon and planets.
The other major drawback is that the included EQ-2 mount can be unreliable at times and maybe a bit lightweight. This is a common problem with cheaper range packages where manufacturers put the value in the mirror, not in the fitting.

You also need to accept that at this price point, the SpaceProbe 130ST is an entry-level range. It’s not as capable as the higher and bigger models on the market … but it’s not a bad thing when it gets started!

Look for Astrophotography features before buying a Telescope:
Automatic installation: This will track the movement of the sky over time. The rotation of the Earth means that the celestial bodies appear to advance slowly across the sky from east to west, at the apparent diameter of the nearly full moon, every two minutes. If you are using telescopes that do not have a robotic mount, objects will appear to be drifting out of the telescope’s field of view, and you will have to constantly re-center the target object manually. This means that you will limit yourself to taking short exposure photos of the sun, moon and planets. A telescope with a robotic mount that tracks the sky means you will also be able to try your hand at long-exposure astrophotography.
Equatorial Stand: These are like regular and tilted tripods, but with the axis of rotation tilted to match the tilt of the Earth. This means that you can follow stars and planets across the sky by moving your telescope on one axis, automatic or otherwise.
Focal length: This means the same thing in astrophotography as it is in regular photography. The higher the focal length, the narrower the angle of view and the greater the magnification. You should choose the focal length according to the size of the items you are interested in.
• Aperture or lens size: the aperture of the telescope, or the size of the objective lens if it is of the refractive type, is important. The larger the aperture of a telescope, the more light it collects and the finer details it can solve. In general, it is not worth considering a refracting telescope with a lens smaller than 75 mm. Aperture does not mean the same as aperture in photography. In astrophotography, what photographers call “aperture” is called “focal ratio”.
Refractive telescope: This is a familiar design to most people, using optical lenses to focus on celestial bodies. It’s basically like a super photo lens, but it’s designed for stargazing. These are the simplest types of preparation and use.
Newton’s reflector: This is shorter and thicker and uses an equivalent mirror to reflect the image back up the top of the tube into an angled mirror near the front. Mirror designs are more compact and often affordable, but may require calibration or “balancing”.
• Maksutov-Cassegrain Reflector: These mirrors are also used, but the secondary mirror at the front bounces the image down the tube and through a hole in the main mirror in the back to a lens or camera adapter in the back. These are similar to the “mirror lenses” that were popular (and are still manufactured) for cameras.
Telescope camera adapter: You will usually need an adapter to attach the camera to your telescope.
