Best Surfboard Leashes 2022 Buying Guide

Best Surfboard Leashes

It’s pretty important to have a leash. It serves quite a few purposes. In the first place, you aren’t swimming into the beach every time you fall on a set wave. As well as your precious surfboard, it won’t be damaged by rocks. Perhaps more importantly, they protect other surfers from your wayward knife as it bounces through a crowded lineup, unless you’re a strange, selfish individual. There are certainly some redeemable aspects of surfing without a leash, such as the feeling of freedom one gets, or the ability to learn to surf without simply flying off the board not knowing where it is going. For the most part, leashes are a good idea. The season for leashes is always in full swing, so here are 10 of our favorites.

1.FCS FREEDOM

(Best for shortboard surfers)

FCS Freedom Surfboard Leash

FCS Freedom Surfboard Leash
  • Featuring a revolutionary new cord, lighter and stronger than any other performance cord
  • High Tensile Over-Braided Nylon Cord: Limited over-stretch designed to return to original length
  • Precision Engineered Cuff: Silicone Grip Print - Reduces slipping around ankle

FCS Freedom uses an advanced cord material that results in a leash that is thinner, lighter, and stronger. As an alternative to the usual urethane cord, FCS has used a thinner polyurethane cord over-braided with nylon.

This combination of polyurethane inner and braided Nylon outer results in a more balanced weight-to-strength ratio. The FCS Freedom is not recommended for longboards or big waves, but for the average shortboard surfer riding smaller waves (e.g. under 5 feet), it is a great choice. You’ll notice reduced drag since it’s thinner and lighter.

It features a neoprene ankle cuff with velcro straps that can be adjusted to fit your ankle comfortably. Silicone is also on the inside of the ankle cuff to prevent it from slipping. The rail saver on a leash made for bigger waves is thinner and lighter than one found on a rail saver on a leash designed for smaller waves.

There is no key pocket in the ankle cuff of this shoe, which might be a deal breaker for some, due to the light design and streamlined styling.

2.WAVE TRIBE ECO LEASH

(Best For Eco-Conscious Surfers)

Eco Leashes by Wave Tribe are made with 100% recycled plastic bottles, which makes them the perfect choice for eco-conscious surfers. No matter what concerns you may have regarding the strength of the recyclable plastic, you can rest assured that it is durable.

Testing was performed by pulling a van across a parking lot – the leash was said to have been stretched to its maximum length yet still returned to its original ineptitude. Even though this does not seem like lab testing to me, it remains a convincing argument all the same.

This leash has a one-year warranty, triple swivels, tangle-free technology, a key slot, and superglue velcro that won’t come undone in the messiest of wipeouts.

3.Dakine Kaimana Team Leash

Having been in business for quite some time, Dakine is a well-established company. Manufacturers of leashes from the company since 1979 have developed a wide range of products since then. What is it like when all your tension subsides and you feel a little tingling? Most likely, you won’t feel that. The 7 millimeter diameter of this cord and two marine-grade, stainless, anticorrosive anchor swivels make this leash durable to withstand heavy use. Despite its size, this board is capable of handling everyday waves up to about two feet in height. Thanks to its sleek design and zero-distraction ankle cuff, this shoe is a great daily driver.

These leashes are perfect for surfers who don’t find themselves surfing the biggest waves every day. They’re made not so much for strength, but for lightness, super comfort, and relatively durability. If you’re going to surf regularly, stay away from this one if the waves exceed six feet. However, the silicone grip on the inside of the cuff is a huge plus.

Thin leashes do not drag as much as thick leashes, making it much easier for you to carry out more difficult maneuvers in a competition. This leash features precision-made swivels, so you don’t have to worry about leash getting in your way.

As a surf product company and a surfing brand, Creatures of Leisure is respected. This company was the first to introduce a swivel to surfboard leashes. The company also innovates traditional leashes with this model. The key to its uniqueness is the patented DNA Flex Mold, which absorbs wave impact. As a result, the leash is strong, flexible, and durable. Several Creatures of Leisure products are of excellent quality, and this one is no exception.

10.OCEAN EARTH PREMIUM ONE-XT

(BEST FOR DURABILITY)

Last update on 2022-05-22 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

With this leash from Ocean and Earth, you won’t have to worry about it breaking. Leashes made with this type of cord are extremely tough, but they are also thicker than ordinary ones. Anti-corrosive steel is also used for the swivel joints, which will remain in good condition for many years. Furthermore, the cuff is made thicker than other modern wristbands. When these things are combined, you get a leash that will last for a very long time.

What Should You Look For?

Do you like leashes? Do you dislike them? A surfboard will come in handy at some point, so make sure you have one.

What should you do if you don’t know what is right for you? It is not enough to just match the leash to the board because it looks good; it must also serve a purpose.

Our buying advice at the bottom of the article will help you understand the terminology and decide which leash is right for you.

BUYING GUIDE FOR SURFBOARD LEASHES

Materials

Polyurethane is one of the materials used today for leashes. In recent years, companies have been turning recycled plastics into extra-strength polyurethane, which is helping to clean the earth one leash at a time.

Straps / Cuffs for ankles

If you are surfing, an ankle cuff or strap is fitted around your back ankle. In most cases, the leashes are made from neoprene and memory gel or similar comfortable materials coupled with velcro to keep them attached to your ankle. You can keep your car key in most ankle cuffs while you surf since they have a key stash.

The swivel

Swivels are located at the place where a leash’s cord connects to the ankle cuff, where the leash’s cord is connected to the ankle cuff. As a result of the “swivel,” the cord can rotate, preventing tangles from forming around your ankles while you walk.

Save the rails

Rail savers protect a board from cords by covering it in a large piece of fabric. Almost everyone wipes out when surfing, and when that happens, the board usually gets torn away from you. This can potentially damage the board because too much tension is put on the leash.

Rail savers prevent this from happening. As the rail saver becomes larger and wider, the tension is dispersed more and the board is more protected. However, larger rail savers create more drag, slowing your speed down. Therefore, you must find the right balance based on the type of surfing you do and the level of protection you want for your board.

The length

Ideally, your leash should be at least as long as your surfboard. If the leash is too short, your board may fling back at you when you wipe out, causing serious injury to you or anyone nearby.

When the leash is too long, however, the board can get too far away from you and get twisted and tangled around your legs or fins.

Thickness

Leashes are generally stronger when they are thicker. The thickness of surfboard leashes generally ranges from 4.7 to 8 mm.

The thinner, lighter leashes tend to create less drag, which is why they are preferred during competitions. The average, non-competition surfer, however, more commonly uses thicker leashes.

The added strength required by big wave surfers also lends itself to thicker leashes for obvious reasons.

What is the ideal leash thickness for me?

It might be difficult to tell a surf leash from another, but thickness is one factor that can make or break your leashed-surfing experience. Surf leash thickness is measured in sixteenths of an inch. Competition (or “Comp”) leashes are approximately 5 to 6 millimeters in diameter, while big wave leashes, such as the Dakine Peahi Leash , easily reach 11 millimeters in diameter. It is important that the leash doesn’t break, but dragging around a half-inch-thick piece of urethane cord is likely overkill. I suggest starting with a 6 to 7 millimeter leash (about 1/4 inch) if you are unsure of what thickness to get. If wearing a leash really freaks you out and you don’t mind swimming if it breaks, try a comp leash, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

What Leash Should I Get?

Generally, I use leashes that are about the same length as the board I am riding. For my shortboards, I have a couple of six-foot leashes, a seven-foot leash for the midlengths, a heavy-duty seven-foot leash for 6-7 foot boards during big waves, and a calf-length 10 foot leash to use for my longboards. While none of my boards are 10 feet long, I enjoy having a few extra inches of length to reach the nose of my surfboard.

Factors That Matter

In terms of leash technology, things have been a bit stagnant recently, but some of the new features popping up may be worth looking into. There are now leashes that come with silicone grips inside the cuff to reduce slippage around the ankle – definitely a must-have for my next leash purchase. A quick-release loop is also built into the ankle cuff of big-wave leashes, which is an awesome feature. This is a great idea in dangerous reefs – the legend has it that Mark Foo, the legendary Mavericks surfer, drowned when his leash tangled with the reef and he was trapped below the surface. As such, chances are you don’t need a quick-release unless you’re surfing a wave that’s as big and dangerous as Mavs.

Overview

There are varying lengths for all these leashes, so you can ride them when you are a beginner on your first soft board or longboard, and also when you are an experienced surfer in crushing waves.

After assessing the importance of a high-quality leash and reviewing the Top 10 leashes for the year, it’s clear that everyone has a wide range of choice and that all of the leashes are of very high quality.

In order to make leashes lighter, more comfortable, more eco-friendly, and more reliable, the technology is getting more advanced every day, and we believe that the performance and quality of leashes will keep on improving.
